Lakay Lifts Lid on Sundowns Uncertainties
Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Lyle Lakay is unsure about his future with the reigning Premier Soccer League (PSL) champions.
Despite his reasonably good defence record for Sundowns, the club loaned Lakay out to Cape Town City FC last season – thanks to his efforts, City were able to complete their campaign with a fourth-place finish on the PSL rankings.
Speaking to a local publication on Saturday, 8 July, the 31-year-old revealed his uncertainties.
“I still have to report back to Sundowns because I have a contract with them and I don’t know what’s gonna happen,” he said. “I have not made any contact with the club, but I still have to report. I was told I’m not a part of the plans, but they still have to decide because I’m contracted to them.”
As for whether or not he plans to stay with City, Lakay said: “That’s not in the plans at the moment, but also Sundowns get to decide what happens next … because the ball is in their court.”
Lakay is currently playing for Bafana Bafana at COSAFA Cup, which is due to run until 16 July – hopefully by then, he and all parties involved will receive clarification regarding his status.
